A new study led by Simon Fraser University’s Dean of Science, Prof. Paul Kench, has discovered new evidence of sea-level variability in the central Indian Ocean.
The study, which provides new details about sea levels in the past, concludes that sea levels in the central Indian Ocean have risen by close to a meter in the last two centuries.
Prof. Kench says, “We know that certain types of fossil corals act as important recorders of past sea levels. By measuring the ages and the depths of these fossil corals, we are identifying that there have been periods several hundred years ago that the sea level has been much lower than we thought in parts of the Indian Ocean.”
He says understanding where sea levels have been historically, and what happens as they rise, will provide greater insights into how coral reef systems and islands may be able to respond to the changes in sea levels in the future.
Underscoring the serious threat posed to coastal cities and communities in the region, the ongoing study, which began in 2017, further suggests that if such acceleration continues over the next century, sea levels in the Indian Ocean will have risen to their highest level ever in recorded history.
The research paper authored by Kench and others, and entitled, “Climate-forced sea-level lowstands in the Indian Ocean during the last two millennia” was published on December 16, 2019, in the scientific journal Nature Geoscience.

In Florida, where the coast is all sand, one inch of sea level rise results in 100 feet of beach erosion. A very large percentage of the population lives on the coast. The question is when will we be denied homeowners insurance? No insurance = no mortgage.
One has to note that all the hyperbole regarding sea level rise ha not deterred people like former president Obama from purchasing beach front property. Apparently so long as we the little folks are sufficiently frighted by climate change those who foster the fear are fine with investing in the opposite possibillity.

In Florida beach restoration projects can significantly increase the size of the beach by pumping beach sand back on the shore that has been washed out. Maybe a good business to start.

NOAA released a report saying that the worst case scenarios from earlier IPCC reports are being exceeded.
Ice melt in Antarctica and Greenland is occurring at 5 to 7 times faster than 20 years ago. This indicates the rate of acceleration of land ice melt. So a 3mm per year rise in sea level could become 20mm per year in 20 years time, 140mm per year 20 years after that, and so on. It is hard to imagine 1m of sea level rise per year but peaks of 5m per decade or even per century are not out of the question.
People still buy low lying coastal properties but they are mainly retirees with only a few years left to go that don’t mind blowing the children’s inheritance.
How can you write ‘unprecedented’ when the abstract says the opposite?

Left out of the above article is information from within the study itself. Note that the abstract states: “…the current magnitude and rate of sea-level rise is not unprecedented.”
The last sentence of the paper states: “Collectively, our coral evidence suggests that rates of recent sea-level change are not unprecedented over the past two millennia.”
Bottom line is that the article is claiming that Indo-Pacific sea levels will rise a little over 20 inches in the next 200 years.
Time for a little truth, isn’t it?
All governments have now developed secret “retreat” plans based on NOAA data. Property will be lost and no compensation offered. The reality is the oceans are warming up, therefore more volume, less ice to reflect sunlight. 1.5m rise in 10 years.
Photographs of Fort Dennison & Balmoral Beach from 1902 in Sydney Harbour reveal no difference in sea level in over 100 years. At low tide those same little rocks stick just above the water line by the same amount. Just cut the BS.
Really, read the paper.

Furthermore, the paper tells us the rate of sea-level rise was higher than now:

So is the article a lie or just incompetence?

If you read the actual study it says “the current magnitude and rate of sea-level rise is not unprecedented” But why let the facts get in the way of a good headline!
